Advani launches election campaign

DIPHU/SILCHAR, March 25: Kheroni Charali, a rural town in West Karbi Anglong’s Hamren subdivision, suddenly came alive today when 5,000-plus supporters of the BJP from across the two Hill districts of Karbi Anglong and NC Hills thronged the election rally addressed by NDA prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

Advani was in Kheroni Chariali to campaign for Kulendra Daulagupu, the BJP’s candidate for the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency seat. The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate was accompanied by MLAs Girin Barua and Susil Dutta, BJP district president Arun Terang and many grassroots-level BJP workers and leaders.

It was a big challenge for the district police to demonstrate its security preparedness when Advani, with his large contingent of Z plus-category security personnel, landed in this otherwise unknown locality to campaign for his party candidate Kulendra Daulagupu.
During his 20-minute long speech, Advani severely criticized the Congress for failing to restore peace and in tackling the insurgency problem.

Terming infiltration as ‘external aggression’ Advani said it was very unfortunate that the manifesto of Congress, which was released yesterday, did not spare a single line on the issue which has been changing the entire demographic fabric of the entire North-east. Advani further added that his party had always been treating the Hindu infiltrators as bonafide citizens of India. He said, “There are no provisions for the detention and deportation of illegal migrants in the Congress’ election manifesto for Asom. In fact, the party has been encouraging migration from Bangladesh.”

Advani also seemed to be aware of the ongoing demand for creation of an autonomous state comprising the two Hills districts, and he assured the crowd of taking up the issue if his party formed the government. However, it remains to be seen whether Advani’s assurance on the long-pending autonomous state issue can cut into the support base of the ASDC party, which has been in the forefront of the autonomous state movement since 1986.

Significantly, while Advani was addressing the gathering at Kheroni Chariali, the ASDC held a political rally at the adjacent rural township of Dongkamukam, which also witnessed a huge gathering of people that included a lot of converts and non-Karbi supporters. The rally was organized by the Hamren district committee of the ASDC to welcome its parliamentary candidate Elwin Teron, who was accompanied by party president Chomang Kro and senior leaders Monsing Rongpi, Bharat Kumar Timung, Jotson Bey, and others. Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) president Rani Rongpipi and Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) general secretary Stalyn Ingti were also present during the rally.

Meanwhile, while addressing another election rally at Silchar, Advani directly challenged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “If Manmohan Singh has the courage, let him contest the election; let him come to the Lok Sabha with the direct verdict of the people,” he said.

Addressing a mammoth rally at Itkhola ground in Silchar, he predicted a re-run of the 1977 debacle for the Congress in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Branding Manmohan Singh as the “weakest” Prime Minister and UPA as the “worst” government the country has ever produced, he asked the voters to throw away the Congress-led government in the forthcoming election.

Advani’s 30-minute long speech basically focused on national issues like price rise, corruption in administration, the Ram Mandir issue, mass suicide by debt-torn farmers, devaluation of the PMO, among others.

Elaborating on the much-publicized IT Vision of the BJP, Advani today said that if brought to power, it would modernize the Sarva Siksha scheme with the help of the internet.
Interestingly Advani did not utter a single word of criticism against Congress candidate Santosh Mohan Dev or against the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government. Addressing party candidate Kabindra Purkayastha as a long time friend, Advani requested the gathering to elect Purkayastha so that the NDA could provide a stable government in the Centre.

AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita had also addressed the gathering at Silchar. Justifying the AGP-BJP alliance, Kalita said his party would definitely work whole-heartedly to ensure the victory of the BJP candidate in Guwahati. THE SENTINEL
