Two Bangladesh army officers die in helicopter crash

Dhaka (AP): A police official says an army helicopter has crashed in a rice paddy field in central Bangladesh, killing two army commanders and injuring another officer.

Police official Abdul Mannan says the accident occurred on Monday in Tangail district, 72 kilometers (45 miles) north of the capital, Dhaka.

Mannan says Maj. Gen. Rafiqul Islam and Lt. Col. Shahid died on the spot. He says a third passenger, Maj. Saeed, was injured and flown in another helicopter to Dhaka's military hospital.

He could not say what caused the crash, but insisted it was not linked to a recent mutiny by Bangladeshi border guards that left 70 people dead, most of them army officers.
