Ranjit Dutta new State BJP chief

NEW DELHI, Jan 20 – Despite stiff opposition from a section of party men, BJP central leadership today confirmed appointment of Ranjit Dutta as the next president of the Assam State unit. Party sources conceding that there was difference of opinion among a section of the leaders, but after a fresh round of discussion within the party, Dutta’s candidature was endorsed.

Central Returning Officer Thewar Singh Ghehlot told newsmen here that Dutta’s name had emerged after consultation with the State leadership and subsequently cleared by the national leaders. Dharmendra Pradhan was despatched by the party as an observer.

Replying to questions, Ghehlot denied that there was differences within the party. There were seven-eight aspirants in the fray. But the national leadership after discussion decided to appoint Dutta.

Pressed further about the open rebellion, Ghehlot said all the State leaders have been asked to work unitedly for the party. “I am confident that Dutta would be able to take along all the party men,” he said.

Outgoing president of the party, Ramen Deka talking to this newspaper from Guwahati said that the central leadership has taken the decision and they would abide by it. “It is a decision of the central leadership and we will follow it,” he said.

A section of the State BJP leaders, including a few MLAs and four MPs, had raised the banner of revolt against Dutta’s selection. They had urged the central leadership to review the decision in the larger interest of the party. The other candidate who was in the running was Nakul Barua. ASSAM TRIBUNE
