BJP reiterates CBI probe demand

Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Feb 22 – The State BJP today reiterated the demand for a CBI probe into the Rs 1,000 crore scandal involving the NC Hills Autonomous Council and condemned Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for what the party described as his utter lack of moral courage to push for an independent probe. The BJP also clarified that no party leader was involved in the scam, as projected by a certain section of the media.
At a press conference held in the city, BJP state president, Ranjit Dutta, remarked that the party supported a CBI probe so that the real picture could be revealed and those guilty identified and punished. “The scam is huge, and a recent report in The Week has indicated that funds have been diverted to extremists and political leaders…therefore, it is important to have a fair investigation,” Dutta remarked.

Referring to the National Investigation Agency’s chargesheet, Dutta said that the agency’s first report had mentioned the names of several Ministers which subsequently did not appear in the final document that included the names of 14 people.

Dutta insisted that the scam was not confined to the period of ten months in which the BJP had an alliance with the Autonomous State Demand Committee, but had taken place over a five-year period in which the Congress party was in power for four years and two months. “The Congress cannot absolve itself of the responsibilities,” he asserted.

He went on to say that not just the financial scam in NC Hills, fair investigations should also be made into financial anomalies of other councils of the state.

Interacting with the media, the party’s spokesperson Kulendra Daulagupu made it clear that he was not in any way an accused in the scam, and his name was there as a prosecution witness. It was a deliberate misinterpretation of a news channel that made insinuations about his involvement, he added.

When asked if the BJP and its alliance partner were aware of financial anomalies during its stay in power, the party leaders said that though they were in the know of things, powers at Dispur gave them little leeway to put things right. ASSAM TRIBUNE
