Security stepped up in Nepal to prevent anti-China protests

Kathmandu (PTI): Nepal stepped up security in the capital on Monday to prevent anti-China protests ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against the communist rule.

The security has been beefed up around the Chinese embassy and Consular Office as officials feared anti-Beijing protest by Tibetans to mark the anniversary of failed uprising in Tibet in 1959, police sources said.

Special security has also been provided to Chinese joint venture companies and business establishments linked to the communist nation operating in Nepal.

The police in plain clothes have been mobilized in large number in the areas on information of possible demonstration, said Nawaraj Silwal, Superintendent of Police in the Metropolis Police Range.

He said police personnel have been mobilized around the Chinese Embassy and Consular Office, as the areas were declaered a special security zone.

The police were working actively in order to tame the anti-Chinese activities in Nepal, he said, adding that they had received intelligence reports that supporters of Dalai Lama from India have entered Nepal.

The police recently rounded up 59 Tibetans involved in suspicious activities in the area and released them after investigation, according to the National News Agency (RSS).
