Jana Vigyan Mela to be organized

GUWAHATI, Sept 21: For the first time in the entire Northeast, a popular scientific platform termed ‘Jana Vigyan Mela’ is going to be organized from October 13 to 16 at Baihata Chariali, Kamrup. The mela is jointly organized by Assam Science Technology & Environment Council, Guwahati and Pub-Kamrup College, Baihata Chariali with financial support from the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Asom.

The very name is indicative of the prime objective to encompass common people in a scientific platform. It is a unique science based community festival to generate scientific awareness amongst the masses at large. This mela will inculcate the education in knowing the world and develop a person’s humanity. Education should start from the day-to-day life of people and be linked with our everyday lives. Through the use of newest technologies, scientific development can be demonstrated to the students in a most simplistic manner. It also paves the way for direct interactions of the community with scientists and technocrats including agriculturist, veterinary scientists, engineers, scientists from various science backgrounds, etc.

Science has become one of the most important factors in the development of society. It is a well known fact that Science education in our country has not been able to stimulate the young minds towards Science. Bare theoretical teaching of Science cannot inculcate the qualities needed for one to learn scientific methods and attitudes. As such, an approach will be made so that the urge towards Science and Technology gets upsurge in the minds of not only students but also common people.

This mela will give exposure to all irrespective of diverse backgrounds to directly interact and participate in understanding Science behind different day to day activities, needs, facilities, miracles, etc. Various Activity Corners by different institutions and organizations to showcase their products and services will be the centre point of attraction in this mela. Activities like Map Learning Workshop, vermi composting, showcase of bio-diversity, food corner of indigenous recipes, medicinal plants, textile design, dyes, etc., food testing and adulteration, rural housing corner, disaster management cell, management of ground water resources, water shed management through rain water harvesting techniques, earth corner, community health centre, remote sensing corner, renewable energy stalls, etc. will be some added feature of this grand mela. Interested parties and organizations are requested to contact the ASTEC Office for the same. A one-day National Seminar on Indigenous Scientific Knowledge of Northeast with special reference to Asom will also be organized. Eminent resource persons will be invited for interaction with the common people, academicians, students and farmers.

In a nut shell, this platform will showcase the entire plethora of development of some crucial Science and Technology related in this region and try to encompass people from various walks of life. This was stated in a press release. THE SENTINEL
