Operation Clean Drive in Tirap

TINSUKIA, Sept 21: Assembly elections hardly a few weeks away, the Tirap district administration and District Election Office (DEO) at Khonsa are sparring no effort to create a conducive atmosphere for free and fair elections. The DEO, Ankur Garg is personally spearheading all poll preparedness programmes. Every aspect is being closely monitored by him to ensure smooth and incident-free elections. Recently Sachin Shinde, IAS, Assistant Commissioner (Election) accompanied by DSP GN Roy and his team raided the shops in the premises of State Transport Office, Khonsa and seized huge quantities of liquor. The shopkeepers were clandestinely concealing the liquor in their shops to sell during elections. Apart from this, the district administration is sensitizing the entire township to check activities of mischief-mongers and hooligans. Round the clock police patrolling in and around the township is being carried out as a pre-emptive step to thwart any untoward incidents. This has been necessitated by presence of different political parties having established their temporary offices at Khonsa.

The District Election Office is working on a war-footing to give finishing touches to all paper work and other arrangements for smooth conduct of elections. The local people who possess licensed guns have begun to deposit their guns at the police station of their respective jurisdictions. Though this is a routine exercise during elections, people are extending their co-operation. All preparations for the October 13 polls is ready not withstanding, the DEO is not leaving any room for any lapses or hiccups whatsoever and he is personally supervising the preparations to ensure flawless and smooth polls. As a matter of fact, Tirap district had smooth Panchayat and Parliamentary elections in the recent past in spite of apprehensions due to presence of insurgents in the district. THE SENTINEL
